Proton Ion Sequencer: What's (very) cool

  1. I think this advance in molecular biology has huge implications for the future of healthcare. As sequencing becomes easier, we'll be able to pinpoint the relative weaknesses of microorganisms and viruses, and what chemicals (drugs) can tackle their defenses. Also, testing of sperm and eggs for couples who have a predisposition to genetic disorders may save their children from debilitating disorders (ignoring any ethical issues). As for ethical issues, I believe that legislation will evolve almost as quickly as this technology does so that respect is given to this powerful new technology.

  2. First, I would just like to mention that it looks to me like the Proton Ion Sequencer will put Dr. House out of a job. It can identify the cause of a disease based on the genetic coding in a matter of hours. It's amazing that this technology was used so effectively soon after being released.

In relation to the readings, this instantly reminded me of Proust and the Squid and the implications this has for identifying disorders such as Dyslexia early on. Much of the problems associated with reading disorders arise from the fact that the problem is identified too late and valuable time is wasted by parents and teachers assuming that the child is simply slow. If the parents are aware from birth that their child will need a special kind of education and be introduced to reading at an early age, many of the problems previously caused by Dyslexia could be avoided.

Certainly the price is still too out of reach for the majority of Americans, but if institutions like LSU are already using the technology, I don't think it'll be too long before it's even more readily available to the general public. Unfortunately, I disagree that legislation will be able to keep up with the technology as I'm sure the science is much faster than our court system.

  3. I loved this technology! I think that it's awesome the way that people will soon be able to easily understand their genetic makeup and diagnosis/detect diseases, disorders, or just genetic tendencies we might have. This technology is going to really change the way the medical field operates and treats patients, as well as researches new cures for existing ailments. In Rewired, they talked about ho w implementing technologies into everyday life has changed the way new generations learn and approach situations. Hopefully with this new technology, we will be able to take a different view on the causes/developments of things like cancer that will help us find a better way to treat people.
