Blast Proof Train: Reade & Amy
Reade and I presented on Secure Metro's latest project, the Blast Proof train. This project was developed in response to the 7/7 bombings in London (essentially their 9/11). Unfortunately, this was not the first attack on the train system in Europe, Madrid and Moscow have also been targets in the past with a bombing in Moscow as recent as 2009. The blast proof train provides a cheaper and more secure environment in the event of a bombing. Damage is incredibly minimized and it encourages a safe and secure environment. However, the project is still in development and has not been tested in a subway environment. Additionally, the main goal of the project was to prevent a mass shutdown of an important transportation system in Europe, not saving the lives of the passengers.

I wish this technology would get more funding since it has practical uses and is very cost effective. While the main goal is a little off putting, it would still save lives and help reduce panic among the citizens. Also it could be a deterrent for terrorists to bomb trains.
ReplyDeleteI feel that the benefits of this technology, such as the increased safety, would be supported by all of the authors we are studying.
A while back in my own post I posed the question whether something could be designed which by its very nature, encourages it to be used in the proper way, rather allowing itself to be abused. This seems to be one of the few things I have seen that does so. Ironically, I think its because once it is in place, there is not really any choices to be made concerning it. While the power to choose is really important, maybe its not so bad to have something which does not allow many choices to be made, every once in a while.
